Back Where It Started
This weekend, I’ll be returning to Newport, Rhode Island to attend the New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta representing Marina Car.
Twenty years ago, I graduated from the International Yacht Restoration School just a short distance from where many of this weekend’s events will take place. Since then, I’ve spent a lifetime working in the boating industry—crewing aboard vessels including a Bunker & Ellis powerboat, the Herreshoff NY 40 Marilee, a J/35, and countless other classic and modern boats.
The Industry Has Changed—And It Hasn’t
Over the past two decades, boating technology has advanced dramatically. Navigation systems, vessel automation, online reservations, and digital marina management tools have transformed many aspects of the boating experience. Companies like Dockwa have done an incredible job simplifying transient reservations and helping marinas modernize their operations.
But one challenge remains largely unchanged: what happens after the lines are tied?
The Last Mile of Destination Boating
For traveling boaters, access beyond the marina can still be one of the biggest frustrations of destination boating. While services like Uber, Lyft, and Turo can be helpful, they often require additional coordination, availability isn’t guaranteed, and many destination marinas are located in areas where those services are limited or unavailable altogether.
That’s exactly why Marina Car was created.
Marina Car provides convenient vehicle access directly at participating marinas, allowing transient boaters to explore local communities, restaurants, attractions, provisioning, and everything else a destination has to offer—without the uncertainty.
Why Newport? Why Now?
This weekend in Newport, I’ll be speaking with boaters, marina operators, yacht club members, and industry professionals to better understand where transportation access is needed most.

If you’re attending the New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta on Friday or Saturday, stop by and say hello. Tell us where you want better upland access, and we’ll work to bring Marina Car there.
Because destination boating shouldn’t end at the dock.
